Back to school!

Hi Everyone!

Summer is almost over as kids get ready to begin their new school season. After an entire year of virtual classrooms, no doubt kids will be happy for the opportunity to finally join in-person with their friends. But with that expect some challenges and it is important for parents and children to prepare together for the new school year. Here are some tips to get the children to a flying start:

1) Schedule, schedule, schedule – Last school year, many just woke up from the bed and jumped on their zoom calls for the classes, having their breakfast when the video was not on. But not anymore! So, start re-establishing their bedtime routine. Get them to bed early, so they rise early and have enough time to eat their breakfast and get ready for the school. Good quality sleep is paramount to educational success. Set a schedule not just for sleeping and eating, but also for doing chores, learning and relaxing.

2) Speaking of foods – Well no more excuse for summer junk food or irregular eating. Everything in moderation is good. Parents should encourage kids to choose healthier options including snacks. Reducing carb intake is helpful, as is staying well hydrated.

3) Masking and hygiene – Though Gov. Abbott's executive orders prevents schools from mandating masks, please remember that masking will help mitigate the risk of contracting covid19. We are already seeing children being diagnosed with covid19 so masking is definitely recommended whether or not there is a mandate. Kids are especially compliant when parents become role models. So as a parent or guardian, mask up for your safety even if you are fully vaccinated, and become the role model for your children. If your child is 12 years and older, definitely take the covid19 vaccine. Vaccines are an effective way to significantly reduce the risk of contracting covid19. And speaking of vaccines, also make sure that your children are up to date on their vaccine records. Speak with your pediatrician if you have any concerns.

4) Parents should always remember to spend quality time with children. But this year, there is a special emphasis. After a very different school last year, there is bound to be significant anxiety for children to attend in-person classes. These could be about the classroom, friends, or even the worries around covid19. So parents, please set some time apart to spend with your child / children – talk to them about the school year and their feelings about it. Ask them everyday how the school went – anything they want to talk and share about their classroom, friends and friendship, extracurricular activities…. just about anything they want to talk about or vent. Reassure them and encourage positivity. Do keep a close eye and get in touch with your pediatrician if you see your child is irritable, over-reacting, sad, aloof, disinterested, or loses appetite. If you need anything, we are here to help!

Welcome class of 2021!
