ADHD, Autism & Neurological Care

Neurological health challenges affect more than 10% of children in North Texas. Dr. Vani provides holistic, culturally sensitive evaluation and management of ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, and other neurological concerns — working as a partner to families and schools.
ADHD impacts boys 3 times more than girls. As with several other conditions, while a prior family history is not needed for development of ADHD, research indicates an influence of genetics inherited from parents.
Undiagnosed and untreated ADHD may have negative consequences for educational attainment impacting self-esteem and leading to development of other behavioral problems. Hence, prompt identification and intervention of ADHD is necessary to allow children realize their fullest potential. While ADHD symptoms span a spectrum, they are marked by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development. This forms the basis of the guidelines in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth edition (DSM-5) to diagnose ADHD.
ADHD Evaluation & Management
ADHD diagnosis follows DSM-5 criteria and requires input from multiple sources — parents, teachers, and direct clinical observation. Dr. Vani uses validated behavioral rating scales completed by parents and teachers as part of a comprehensive evaluation.
- Parent and teacher behavioral rating scales
- Review of school performance, report cards, and teacher notes
- Physical exam to rule out medical causes for attention difficulties
- Discussion of treatment options: behavioral strategies, school accommodations, and when appropriate, medication
- Ongoing monitoring of medication effectiveness and side effects at follow-up visits

Frequently Asked Questions
My child was just diagnosed with autism — what do I do next?
First, take a breath. Dr. Vani will help you understand the diagnosis and create a roadmap for next steps, which typically includes referrals to a developmental pediatrician, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and potentially ABA therapy. Early intervention makes a significant difference — the sooner services begin, the better.
How is ADHD diagnosed?
ADHD diagnosis requires symptoms present in two or more settings (home and school), onset before age 12, and significant impairment in functioning. Dr. Vani uses parent and teacher rating scales, clinical interview, behavioral history, and physical exam. No single test diagnoses ADHD — it is a clinical diagnosis.
Does my child need medication for ADHD?
Not necessarily. For younger children and milder cases, behavioral strategies and school accommodations are often the first-line approach. Medication is one tool among many, and Dr. Vani discusses all options with families before any decision is made. The goal is the most appropriate intervention that is specific to your child’s needs.
Can you help with 504 plan documentation?
Yes. Dr. Vani provides the physician documentation required to support 504 plans and IEPs. Please bring relevant school records, teacher reports, and any prior evaluations to your appointment. Allow adequate time — this documentation cannot be completed at a sick visit.
What is the difference between a 504 plan and an IEP?
A 504 plan provides accommodations within a regular classroom (extra time, preferential seating, frequent breaks). An IEP (Individualized Education Program) provides more comprehensive special-education services for children whose disability requires specialized instruction. Dr. Vani can help document the medical basis for either.
Do you evaluate headaches, seizures, tics, or other neurological concerns?
Yes. Dr. Vani evaluates and provides initial management for common pediatric neurological concerns — including headaches and migraines, tics and Tourette, developmental delays, and seizure events — and coordinates referral to pediatric neurology when specialized testing or ongoing care is needed.
When would my child need to see a pediatric neurologist?
Most everyday neurological concerns can be evaluated in the office. Dr. Vani refers to pediatric neurology when symptoms are complex, persistent, or need specialized testing (such as an EEG or MRI) — for example, recurrent seizures, severe or worsening headaches, or unexplained developmental regression. A first-time seizure, a serious head injury, or any life-threatening symptom is an emergency — call 911 or go to the nearest ER.
