ADHD is a common condition affecting over 10% of children in North Texas region. Boys are reported to be 3 times more affected by ADHD than girls. As with several other conditions, while a prior family history is not needed for development of ADHD, research also indicates an influence of genetics inherited from parents. Undiagnosed and untreated ADHD may have negative consequences for educational attainment impacting self-esteem and leading to development of other behavioral problems. Hence, prompt identification and intervention of ADHD is necessary to allow children realize their fullest potential. While ADHD symptoms span a spectrum, they are marked by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development. This forms the basis of the guidelines in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth edition (DSM-5) to diagnose ADHD.
When a family is concerned about their child’s challenges in school, Dr. Vani will first provide questionnaires to the family, school and, on some occasions, the patient. After reviewing the responses, Dr. Vani schedules a conference for an in-depth discussion with the parents to understand their observations and concerns, family and social histories to identify and rule out potential mental health conditions that may appear like ADHD. Dr. Vani then reviews these findings in conjunction with the DSM-5 criteria to make a definitive diagnosis of ADHD. Once diagnosed, Dr. Vani will ensure that parents and children have access to resources that will help them better manage the condition. A treatment approach is also identified that would work best for the child and the family.
Treatment is age-dependent and can include a combination of 504 plan for school accommodations, behavior therapy including training for parents and / or medications. If medications are used we will routinely check for growth progress, sleep problems and blood pressure changes. Importantly, annual well checks have to be up to date. Sometimes, a referral will be provided to expand the care team to include ADHD coaches, therapists, psychologists or psychiatrics.
