Warts on the skin are harmless and mostly painless growths due to viruses (eg. Molluscum, Papillomavirus). Warts usually spread to other parts of the body and can be transmitted to other people. Hence, children who are in close contact with someone who has warts or those with a weak immune system are more likely to have warts.
Warts are of many different types, look different and can caused by different types of viruses. They occur at several regions of the body including fingers, around the nails, elbows, knees, or on the face including eyelids and lips. Warts can be identified during a routine physical exam and most disappear with months without treatment. However depending on the location, type and how many are growing, warts may be treated with topical (on the skin) medicines or freezing it with liquid nitrogen.
Please talk to Dr. Vani during your visit if you are concerned or considering wart removal for your child.
