Childhood obesity rates have steadily increased over the past decade and it is not uncommon for families to miss recognizing the problem until it is advanced. Weight issues affect physical and psychological health of the child. Children often face isolation from peers at school, are subject to bullying, experience anxiety and depression. They are at high risk for eating disorders including starving, excessive exercising, binge eating, night eating and forced vomiting. It is therefore important to address them right away once identified.
The first indication of any potential problem can be uncovered during the comprehensive well check. During this visit, for children over 2 years of age, we will calculate your child's BMI and determine where it falls on the BMI-for-age growth chart. This can help flag problems early if the BMI is abnormal for the age and height of the child. Upon suspicion of weight problem, Dr. Vani will conduct a thorough review of the family's history of obesity and associated conditions such as diabetes, your child's eating habits and activity levels, other medical and psychosocial conditions. Some blood tests may also be order as a part of this investigation.
At Care & Cure Pediatrics we work together with families in weight management. Treatment approaches are age-dependent with emphasis on healthy eating and lifestyle modification. The treatment is further individualized taking into account family dynamics, cultural preferences and parental beliefs. Research has demonstrated that alignment and adherence to treatment plan is essential for long term success.
